Since the essence of God is love, everything He does must be beneficial. Love cannot exist in a vacuum. Though His judgments be ever so severe, they must ultimately work for the good of the recipients. Long before God revealed His love in Jesus Christ, Job knew this:

Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him … (Job 13:15).
