Seven times a day do I praise thee, because of thy righteous judgments (Psalm 119:164).

The book of Psalms is full of praises. The book of Psalms is in fact a book of praise in the Old Testament. Many praises are quoted from Psalms. However, the Psalms contain chapters not only of praises but also of suffering. The praising ones are the very ones who have been led through trying situations.

These psalms show us men led by God through shadows of darkness. They were rejected, slandered and persecuted. Words of praise do not always come from the mouths of the smooth-sailing ones. They come much more from those who are under discipline and trial.

Light Pains, Heavy Glory

Our light affliction is transitory, but it results in a blessing that is lasting; our affliction is light, but it results in a “weight of glory.” (II Corinthians 4:17).

A “weight of glory” is easily and happily carried. No one ever wanted it lightened. It will help us to carry our burdens if we remember that every one of them that is borne patiently, trusting in Christ, will be transformed some day into a lasting “weight of glory.” Such weights are like wings; they do not depress, they lift us to the skies.
